An introduction to collecting car brochures.

Ever since the first car was made manufacturers and tuners have been producing literature to promote their products.

One of the most interesting aspects of collecting auto brochures is that they provide a unique social history of the time they were produced.

For example if you have a brochure for a Volkswagen Beetle from the 1960's you will find information about the time in which it was produced like hairstyles, clothing and popular decor of the time.

Add to this, the fact that most brochures can be bought inexpensively and take up little space to store (unless you get obsessed!) you have the basis for a popular and rewarding hobby.

However, as with all collecting there are many ways (especially as a beginner) that you can come unstuck and end up spending your hard earned money on inferior, fake or incomplete brochures.

Over the coming weeks, amongst other things I will cover the purchase, safe-keeping and suggested themes for brochure collections and provide an analysis of a number of my favourite brochures both expensive and in one case commonly available for less than ?4 or $8!

Hopefully you will find my articles both a valuable resource and one that improves your knowledge of this area of collecting.

Ways to Save Money on Your Prom

I was probably not like many other girls in my class. I did not want to go to our prom. I wasn't dating anyone at the time, so I didn't think it would be too much fun and couldn't justify wasting money on something I didn't want to do in the first place. As I watched my mother's eyes well up with tears at the thought her only daughter would miss the prom, I reluctantly agreed to go, but only on MY terms, which meant spending as little money as possible. I managed to do it for less than $20 and so I'd like to share my tips with you.1. Find a way to get a discounted ticket. If you are truly in a financial crunch, that $50-$100 ticket can be a big blow to your savings. Sometimes schools will allow discounts for group tickets purchased, so see if you can rally up with some other friends. If this is not an option, try talking to one of your favorite teachers or principal to see if they would consider waiving the fees for students who can't afford to go. Some prom committees will factor this in their budget. Another option is to take a collection up at school from the students or teachers for helping lower the prices of prom tickets or helping others who can't afford to get in. You could also offer to work for a neighbor or teacher at the school for the amount of a ticket if all other options fail.2. Find your dress at the thrift store. I paid $4 for a gorgeous, long, silky, and dare I say sexy, red dress at our local Goodwill store. I had never worn a red dress before, and I know it wasn't in style at the time of my prom. But I looked good in it, it was formal, and I couldn't beat the price. The night of prom I attracted a lot of attention with that dress, getting compliments from people I never even talked to before! Only my best friend and I knew it was a $4 dress! Other girls probably paid nearly $200 on theirs!

3. Get your shoes at a big box retailer. I spent the most on shoes, for a $12 pair from Wal-Mart. They were sleek and no one even noticed them, let alone worried about how much I spent for them or where I got them!4. Borrow your accessories. To accentuate my dress, I wore a pearl necklace that was my grandmother's. My friend lent me some hair clips that matched nicely with the pearls. Ask your friends and relatives if you can dig through their jewelry to find the right accessories. If they are worried about you losing them or forgetting to return them, offer one of your most prized possessions as collateral.5. Have a Friend Do Your Hair. While your regular everyday hair do might be fine, if you want to look extra special for the big night, see if one of your friends can do your hair for you. Borrow a book from the library and practice doing different hairstyles on each other a few weeks in advance. This will save you $40 from having to go to the salon.6. Forget the Limo. Many schools now provide bus transportation to and from prom to promote safety. If your school doesn't offer this, try seeing if you can persuade someone to drive you there and back instead. Some of my friends drove in a fancy classic Cadillac for the big night. I ended up driving myself with some friends - this was a lot less than the $60 it would cost to chip in for a limo!7. Bring your own camera. The prom photographer can charge some hefty package rates on pictures. Bringing your own camera and capturing the moments yourself can save you another $35 on the big night.8. Make your own corsage. If you can get flowers from your own backyard or a neighbor's garden, you can make your own corsage and save money and hassle from going to a florist. Alternatively, you can make your corsage from tissue paper, doing it for a fraction of the cost of live flowers.I ended up having a great time at prom despite my initial reluctance. I saw many friends spend hundreds of dollars on the big night. By shopping carefully, making do with what you have, and not being afraid to go with your own style, you can do it for much less!

Prom Hairstyles for Long Hair

Girls with long hair have all kinds of options when selecting a hairstyle for the prom: whether to keep hair swept up or leave it down, or how simple or elaborate the style should be. Here are three prom style suggestions for those with long hair:Chignon: The chignon is a popular choice for women with medium to long hair; it's a soft bun, which can give you an elegant look. Make sure you have a blow dryer, 2 ponytail holders, bobby pins, and gel or hairspray. Firstly, decide on how you will part your hair, either a center part or a side part. Then gather your locks into a low ponytail at the base of your neck. If you have hair gel, this is the time to apply it to your ponytail. Then twist the hair into a loose bun. Secure your loose bun with the second ponytail holder and bobby pins. Finish your style with a spritz of hairspray. You can allow the ends to stick out for a more youthful look. Sassy messy updo: Another option for a medium to long prom hairstyle is the sassy updo. You will need a leave-in conditioner or detangler, styling cream, gel, paddle brush, curling iron, and blow dryer. Blow-dry your hair until it is completely dry, separating it into 2 by 4 inch sections. Make sure to aim the airflow from the root to the ends. After parting your hair in the front (2 inches from the hairline), make a horizontal part from ear to ear. Separate your hair along this part and pull the lower half of your hair into low ponytail with an elastic.

Use the curling iron to curl sections of the hair caught in the ponytail. Secure these curls with bobby pins so they cascade from the ponytail roots to the nape of the neck. Make sure the curls are a little messy to keep this style fun and modern. For the hair left out of the ponytail, make your desired part and style it into an eye-brushing sweep. You can use a flat iron to make it look sleek (but leave a little curl at the ends for a little flick). Finish off with hairspray to make sure the style holds. You can now accessorize the updo with accent clips hair gems, or a side flowerSide-swept hairstyle: To capture this hairstyle, you will need a hair elastic, defrizzing agent, and hair gel. To start off, apply hair gel and the defrizzer to dry hair to smooth it out. Make your desired part, and then pull the hair into a low side ponytail. Simple and easy!

Perfect Prom Hairstyles

Your senior prom will be one of the most memorable nights of your life and you don't want to look back upon it and remember the horrible hairdo you wore to the dance. However, you don't have to spend big bucks at a hair salon to get the perfect hairstyle. There's tons of do-it-yourself hairstyles that look absolutely gorgeous and will go perfectly with your prom dress. Check out some of these celebrity styles that'll make you shine brighter than a star at your high school prom! Before you start any hair style, make sure that you've washed your hair thoroughly with a good shampoo and conditioner. You may need the help of a blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron, bobby pins and hair pins, as well as some hairspray to hold your style. The Sophisticated ChignonCourtesy of NexxusThis elegant yet simple hairstyle is absolutely stunning. You can achieve this gorgeous style without much effort and it's a fast solution if you're in a hurry.1. First, wash through your hair with a nourishing shampoo and conditioner. If you want to add volume and texture to your hair, apply any texturing hair product after shampooing. 2. Next, use a blow dryer to completely dry your hair. To set your hair to a curly style, brush it with a round brush while blow drying. Nexxus also recommends you to use an air director nozzle when blow drying.3. After your hair is dried, separate your hair into different sections and tightly wrap each section around a hair roller. If you do not have any hair rollers, you could just wrap them around your fingers. Depending on your hair texture, you should let your hair set for about 5-10 minutes.

4. Smooth out your hair with a bit of hair spray.5. Use a comb to create a side part in your hair and pull your hair into a ponytail just above your navel. Make sure your pony tail is on the same side as your part.6. Hold the ponytail with an elastic band and divide the ponytail into two sections.7. Take one section and wrap the hair into a loop shape like the way you would wrap it around a hair roller. Create other loops with the remaining part or parts of that hair section. Pin the loops into place using hair pins or bobby pins (I would recommend using bobby pins unless you have very thin hair because bobby pins have a tighter and stronger hold). Proceed to do the same with the other section of the ponytail. If you have unruly pieces of hair sticking out in different places, either pin them down with a bobby pin or smooth them down with a strong holding hair spray.Elegant French TwistThis traditional hairstyle is a crowd pleaser everywhere. The classy style only takes minutes to do and is extremely easy.1. This style usually works best on hair that's not been washed on the same day as newly-washed hair tends to be very slippery and difficult to handle. If you just washed your hair, apply a generous layer of working hair spray.2. Brush all of your hair back and pull into a loose pony tail just above the navel. Hold the pony tail with your left hand. Do not use an elastic band to hold the pony tail.3. With your right hand, grab the bulk of the pony tail and start twisting it clockwise in an upward direction. Make sure the twist is tight against your head.4. After you have twisted all of your hair against your head, use your left hand to hold the roll.5. Use a large bobby bin and start from the bottom of the roll. Insert the tip of the pin into the side-center part of the roll to hook a small amount of hair. Turn the bobby pin 180 degrees and secure the pin into the hollow created by the twist (the part between your head and the roll). Repeat this process as many times as you need to until the entire roll has been secured. Tuck in the loose ends underneath the roll. Use a hairspray to control any flyaways.Classy Easy UpdoCourtesy of Hair BoutiqueThis is probably the simplest of all hair updos yet it's elegant and classic. It takes just a few minutes to create this updo. (with a little practice you can get it under five minutes)1. Pull your hair into a tight ponytail and wrap it with an elastic band.2. Take the bulk of the ponytail and start twisting the hair around and over the elastic band and the root of your ponytail. Wrap the roll tightly around the base.3. Secure the style with some bobby pins and use a hairspray to hold down the style to smooth flyaways.4. You can add extra accessories such as hairsticks and barrettes to this style if you want to.The above three styles are all fairly simple and can do much to make your prom a memorable one. Experiment with them and remember, the key to any perfect style if practice, practice, practice.

Let Your Prom Hairstyle Be the Updo Way

Prom Night is nearly here, you've got your gown, your shoes, your jewelry and your ready to shine. On your prom night your hair will be one of the things that will be immediately noticed. Hence, it is recommended that you do utmost hairstyle preparation before your promenade so your hair will not fail. An updo hairstyle will not be possible if you have short hair. Hence if you want to let your prom hairstyle be the updo way on your promenade, let it grow from medium to long length. For sexy short hair styles for prom, try the messy prom style. Use styling cream, comb your hair forward diagonally and spray up random parts - very much like popular boy styles. Consider also that short hairstyles are more often associated with casual or sporty lifestyles, while long hairstyles are more likely associated with a sexy looking image.Curly Prom updo prom hair styles seem to work better with your hair a little dirty. You don't want your prom updos to be a prom down do. Especially if you paid for the prom updos. My personal favorite way of finding elegant timeless prom hairstyles is to watch old movies, you know that if a style looked good 50 years ago, it will always look good - but not everyone has the time to sit and watch old shows. Once you decide show your stylist your prom dress and accessories and any photos you find of prom hair styles you like. Do a practice run, so on that special day, you will look absolutely Gorgeous!

Many great prom hairstyles are created in the hair salon, but that does not mean that you cannot get astonishing results with a hairdo made at home by yourself or with the help of your close friends to achieve the hairstyle you want. Another consideration is whether to wear your hair up or down; both have their merits. Wearing it up is much more traditional and definitely something different from what you may normally do with your hair. Having it down however can also look very elegant. Do a practice run, so on that special day, you will look absolutely Gorgeous! www.hairstylescut.com offers cool advice on prom hairstyles, prom hairstyles pictures and prom dresses

How to Have a Perfect Prom From Flowers to Limos to Dresses to Hairstyles

Proms should an exciting, memorable and awesome experience for every girl out there, but it also can be really stressful! It's fun to get prepared for prom, but if you wait for until the last minute, you may be worried that you won't get everything done. So, by all means, plan ahead. Sometimes, a guy asks you to the prom a week before (what is he thinking!?!), but with some quick thinking you can make it all work!Let me break it down:Flowers: Traditionally, your date will buy the flowers. If your date is clueless, it's OK, because you can definitely help him. You should go together to get matching flower corsages and boutonnieres. I recommend that you put your order in at least 2 weeks in advance because the florist can get really busy around prom season. Matching your corsage to your dress and your date's boutonniere is important. It looks good to match and it shows the world that you two are together. You can go to your florist with a fabric swatch or a picture of the dress and they will guide you to the right type and color of flower. Corsages can be displayed creatively in your hair, pinned to an evening bag, tied around your wrist/ankle, or can be held. Dress: You should start shopping for a dress as soon as you want to because it can take you some time to find the dress that is meant for you. There are so many styles and colors out there! This is a glamorous night, so sparkle and shine as much as you want. Check out department stores, vintage shops, and store sales for dresses. Accessories: Once you find your dress, you should pick out some cute accessories to accent your look. Earrings are always a favorite and can really make you glow! Sometimes, it's great to have a necklace, but depending on your dress, a naked neck is very attractive! A ring or two on your finger give character to your hands and can look very beautiful with freshly manicured hands.

Don't forget about hair pieces! They add glitter and shine to any hairdo and can really look breathtaking. It's also fun to use white stripes or whitening toothpaste for the perfect prom smile. It's a good idea to break in your prom shoes so you can keep smiling the whole night through! Bad shoes can hurt! Transportation: Call a few limousine companies to compare prices. Keep your eyes open for coupons in the paper. The more people you can fit in the limo, the less expensive it will be for each of you. After the prom, you can have the limo driver drop you all off at hotel or someone's house. Sleepover, have fun, and stay in one spot. Cops will be looking for after-prom drunk drivers, so don't drink and drive.Food: If you are getting dinner before the prom, it's always good to play it safe and make reservations. Find out if your school is offering dinner. If not, you, your date, and all your friends could go out together, or you and your date could have a romantic dinner for two before the prom. Remember, try keep your immune system boosted so you avoid getting a cold for the prom. Get 8 hours of sleep, drink lots of water, exercise 3-4 times a week, and eat a balanced diet. If you treat your body right, you will look and feel your best. Bring a camera to prom and snap as many pictures as you please!Proms can be expensive ($150-$2000), but there are always ways to cut costs. These are important areas to take into consideration.Prom tickets Pre-prom dinner (if your school doesn't offer it) Prom dress Prom shoes Manicure/pedicure Your hair-do (if it's done by a professional)Prom photo costs Limousine costs Boutonniere costsWays to save money include:Doing your nails and hair yourself, or with the help of friends. You could have dinner at your house before the prom. Show off your cooking skills and ask your family to go out for dinner that night! Borrow a friend, sister, cousins, neighbors, or mom's dress, or buy a dress at a lower end department or outlet stores. Just look at lots of stores and you will find your perfect dress!

How to Achieve the Perfect Hairstyle for Prom

Most school proms around the country start around May and June. The "Hollywood" bliss is adored by young women of all ages. Parents whip out their wallets to invest in the special occasion. Expenses can climb quickly to the point of exhaustion. You have the perfect dress, shoes, transportation and date........but you don't have the right hairstyle! Most women feel more secure when their hair is done to their liking.Spritz and sculptured ponytails are a thing of the past! Please say a prayer for the gel ponytail, scrunchies, beads, twisty and tight spiral curls. A new year mean a new attitude and style. Here a list of how to accomplish the perfect prom hairstyle for every type of hair.Short Hair: There are many advantages for having short hair, such as pinning it up. Use hair pomade (a mixture of wax and gel). This gives the hair a gloss and shine, which gives the illusion of healthy hair. Apply the pomade and tease the ends of your hair so that the hair frames your face. If you would like to pin it up, make sure to use diamond in crested hair pins. Pick hairpins that have small flowers the color of your dress. Add bangs for a more finished look.Medium Hair: Medium length ladies have the luxury of making their hair appear longer or shorter. To make your hair look fuller, purchase a set of Velcro rollers. These type of rollers assist with making the hair straight as it air dries. (You can either air dry your hair or use a bonnet heater). Start with freshly washed and shampooed hair. Twist hair until excess water is gone. Start with the back of your head and section hair. Apply wrapping or setting lotion to each section. After doing so, comb hair with a rat tail comb. This is to straighten and smooth hair. Starting at the bottom, roll hair onto the Velcro roller. Continue this until entire hair is rolled. If you let it air dry, roll hair the night before.

When hair is dry, undo the Velcro roller and lightly comb through hair with a wide toothed comb. Make sure that the comb is very wide toothed because if the teeth are close together, it could cause frizziness.Long Hair: Long hair would look great with soft, glowing curls. Your can accomplish this look by washing and blow drying hair. Use Herbal Essence hair straightening mousse before blow drying. After hair is dry, spray on a thermal hair protector against heat. Starting with the back, flat iron small pieces of you hair. Do this until hair is completely straighten. After hair is straightened, use large wheeled curler to curl small section of your hair. When hair is completely curled, wait until hair has cooled before spraying on a light hold spray. Make sure to separate curls with the fingers to eliminate the risk of frizzy hair. With any hair style, do not use too much hair products! This can cause the hair to look oily or weighed down. Many women noticed that when they use a lot of hair produced, their hair is not as bouncy or shiny. Too much product can also make the hair look crusty and hard.

Curly Prom Hairstyles

Historically, prom night has been known as the quintessential gala of the 20th century for American high school students, and today the legend lives on. Traditionally, there are three things that a young lady will concern herself with before prom, and they are commonly known as the 3 Ds: her date, her dress and her 'do.Today, it is no longer traditional for a young man to ask a high school sweetheart out to the prom. Quite the contrary, young teen girls are no longer reserved, kick back and waiting to be asked out, no, no! Many are taking it upon themselves to request the presence of young teen boys, while others are content to enjoy a girls or guys night out on the town, after all its prom night, a night of liberation. Thirty years ago it would have been unthinkable for a young lady to be pernicious, but innocence and virtues have taken a turn towards the door of total independence, and although some rules have changed, others have remained the same. For example, finding the right dress always tops the list and can sometimes be a grievous and tedious experience for most girls. Many questions come to mind such as, what will I wear? Should I wear sequence or ruffles; will it be long or short? What color will I choose? And finally, these dreaded words: I've got to lose ten pounds in order to be ready for prom night. There is no doubt that a prom dress can make or break this most memorable event. However, unlike her date, and her dress, the hairdo can be a bit touchy. There are any numbers of styles of which to choose from. Here are a few pointers to help you along the way.

Finding the right hairdo begins in the capable hands of a qualified hairstylist. Begin by setting an appointment in advance to agree upon a brief consultation, time, and date. If you have not acquainted yourself with a local salon, then you might want to try www.jcpenneysstylingsalon.com, just to familiarize yourself with the surrounding mall salons and to become more acquainted with a new stylist. Furthermore, it is advisable to check around within the local shopping malls and community styling salon for prices and availabilities. It is recommended that you go in with some idea about the style of your prom dress in an effort to better aid and assist your stylist to provide you with the proper hairdo. Hairstylist will most often reflect upon the design or pattern of the dress. For example, a sleeveless dress can easily be enhanced with an adorable ponytail hair piece or hair extensions, and or a lovely cascade of poker curls, which are rich in both tradition and form. However, when wearing add-ons or weaves be sure that placement is centered and comfortable to avoid unnecessary tension, the hair piece should be placed high and slightly centered to help slenderize the facial contour. Your stylist may also choose to accentuate your look with or without facial ringlets around the temporal, and or the nape area. Visit www.wigs.com to learn more about hair pieces and designs. Next, if your style of dress is a low cut backless gown, or a spaghetti strap evening wear then you may choose a more traditional hairstyle much like the Geisha girl up 'do, which requires fair amount of back combing, and or hair weave to create a cushion. The remaining hair is used to smooth over the web and is secured with the use of hair pins to create a flawless finish. The high school prom comes once in a lifetime, so you may choose a special brooch, or baby breath to accentuate this elegant design. Finally, you can find many tips and styles on prom up 'dos and other styles from various magazines. Such as, Glamour, In Style, and Modern Bride to help you create the right look. Sedu Prom Hairstyles

Sedu prom hairstyles are among some of the most popular styles being chosen by prom-goers. The Sedu allows you to achieve sleek, straight, beautiful hair. And who wouldn't want to look like Jennifer Aniston or Jennifer Lopez? Their hair is consistently gorgeous and is reportedly achieved with a Sedu. At first thought, it may seem like the Sedu is a one-trick wonder. Straight hair. Can you really achieve Sedu prom hairstyles that have glamour and drama? Of course you can. With some practice you can achieve curls and flips with your Sedu as well as merely straightening and smoothing. Some of the styles and looks you can achieve for prom with a Sedu are: Sleek and chic dead straight hair that is down loose. Variations can be achieved by flipping your ends, leaving your ends curly while the top is straight. Long loose curls can also be achieved by twisting the hair around the Sedu as you work your way down the hair, not just going straight. Hair Style City has instructions on achieving this look. You can also view a video there, "How To Use Your Flat Iron To Make Waves And Curls And Create A Refreshing Style." The up 'do is a prom hairstyle staple. Prom Hairstyles for Today's Young Woman

Long hair is in and it's not necessary to wear it in an updo to this year's prom. There are a lot of options for long hair styles. If you want longer hair for prom night, consult your professional stylist in time to get clip in extensions or weaves for prom night. Extensions can be used to create long stacked layers or lengthen hair that isn't quite long enough to achieve the sultry prom hair style you want. If you wear your hair down, try to keep it soft and supple, whether you wear big, soft, sexy curls, or soft layers around your face and shoulders. You don't always have to have a dramatic hair style for prom; just wearing your hair a little differently can make a special hair style for prom. If you usually wear big, sexy curls, straighten your hair for prom. If you have tight curls have your stylist help straighten your hair while keeping it soft and sexy. Frizz and singed ends are not part of the prom hair style you are looking for, so schedule an appointment with your stylist now, or get the latest hair styling tools which help care for your hair. Big, sexy prom hair is not the same as big 80's hair. Big hair in the 80's was stiff, wide, and wild. Big, sexy hair for this year's prom means soft supple curls, achieved with large barrel ceramic curling irons. Updos will never go out of style as a prom hairstyle. Traditional updos and French twists clipped into an updo are a great hairstyle for any prom or formal event. The key to this year's prom is to keep the look natural. Do not bury the natural sheen and beauty of your hair under a canopy of hairspray. Besides, if you do, you'll be dancing and your hair will be standing still at prom.

If you go for an up do, have your stylist accent curls around the face. Curls are cute and they frame your face. Short prom hairstyles can also frame your face. Smooth styles brushed down and turned toward your face are cute and stylish. Keep them sleek, but loose and natural. It can be done with new soft hold hair products. Be sure to go the extra mile with your make-up when you wear a layered or curled style that frames your face. It will pull people's eyes in the direction of your face, and why not? It's prom night so show them how beautiful you really are! If you are a little more daring, or need a prom hairstyle that reflects your personality have your short or long curls large and defined, but have them tousled a little. Don't go too far; let your stylist create a slight windswept look, not a disheveled mess. Your professional stylist can recommend the best products to achieve and hold this look without looking like your hair is shellacked in place. Pins, headbands, and decorative clips are hot items to help accessorize your prom hairstyle. Don't be afraid to experiment, but this year; don't be afraid to be comfortable in your own hair. You can be beautiful, sexy, and comfortable all at once for prom. After all, you are the class of 2008, setting a new agenda! By Lenora Murdock
